"No Ordinary Run"

[guest post from Chris Smith]

Cover story in today's TTU student paper (Daily Toreador): check it out!

Best quote:
"I am not a speed person. I am persistent. [But] I finally finish."

So he is running 1,000 miles. Can you spare a dollar, or a dime, per mile, to help Bill reach his goal?

And please pass the word!

Help a brother out! (Chris Smith guest post)

[Chris Smith here, posting to ask your help on Bill's behalf]

Friends: slowly but surely people are getting aboard the Holtkamp express. But Bill needs your help! Encouraging messages especially welcome: here, to Facebook, to his ttu account william.ballenger@ttu.edu, to the Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/SaveTheHoltkamp), anywhere you can post. He's putting in the miles, but we can ALL help with his motivation.

Now Twitter! and Runkeeper!

Dear friends:

The run continues strong--right on track for April 1 2011 (is it mere coincidence that I'm supposed to finish on April Fool's Day?!?).

You can now follow progress on Twitter (hashtag #SaveTheHoltkamp), which feed is also updated in real time, at the top of this blog. And you can track my daily mileage via Runkeeper; check it out!

See Bill run! Run, Bill, run!

See Bill run! Run, Bill, run!

TTU School of Music Director William Ballenger is running 1000 miles between Sept 1 2010 and April 1 2011, raising matching funds to renovate the Texas Tech University Holtkamp Organ!

We need your pledge TODAY!

The Texas Tech University School of Music is seeking gifts and donations for the purpose of raising $350,000 to renovate the Holtkamp Pipe Organ located in Hemmle Recital Hall.

Thanks to a very generous challenge grant from The CH Foundation, we are halfway there! We must raise at least $175,000 to achieve our challenge grant goal — deadline
April 1, 2011.

How Can You Help?

To make a donation or financial pledge you may:
• Visit www.music.ttu.edu
• Contact the TTU School of Music at 806-742-2295
• Print and complete the form below and mail it to the School of Music (MS2033, Texas Tech University, 79409-2033; attn: Janeen Gilliam)

Why This Organ Needs Renovating

The organ in Hemmle Recital Hall is the only performance pipe organ at Texas Tech University. The instrument was installed when the Recital Hall was built. American organ builder Walter Holtkamp originally built the instrument for a recital hall at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. This grand instrument was then acquired by Texas Tech University through a generous gift from Tommye A. Moss of Odessa, Texas, and it has served the music community very well for more than 33 years.

Today, the Holtkamp pipe organ is in need of serious renovation, rebuilding, and an expansion of its capabilities to provide a more substantial bass and a wider dynamic palette. Major issues have arisen — at risk of rendering the instrument completely unplayable. The Holtkamp organ has been without a complete overhaul since its installation and dedication in February of 1977.

Excellence in a School of Music is in a large part dependent upon its ability to maintain the finest in essential musical instruments. The Holtkamp pipe organ is exactly that kind of instrument.

Follow Bill’s progress at: www.music.ttu.edu, and at his Twitter feed, Facebook group, and Youtube channel.

But Bill is not running alone! We need your help! Please consider making a donation: print the following form, fill out, and send (with a check!) to the address specified.

And please pass the word!
